AI visibility audit for hotels and hospitality groups

An AI visibility audit for hotels and hospitality groups checks what AI assistants say when a traveller asks them where to stay.

The assistants are ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini and Perplexity. The audit records whether each one names your property and whether it has the rooms, the facilities and the policies right. It also records the websites each answer relied on.

The audit is written for owners and operators of independent hotels and hospitality groups. A group’s restaurant, bar or event space is checked with its own questions.

The first review is delivered within two business days. It's a real human analysis of your brand, not an automated PDF.

A traveller types a question into ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity:

“Which independent hotel in downtown Toronto has parking and takes dogs?”

The assistant writes back with something like this:

Here are three hotels to consider.

  1. A competing hotel Described as having parking on site and rooms for guests with dogs.
  2. A second competing hotel Described from its page on a booking website.
  3. Your hotel Described as having no parking.

Websites linked in the answer: two booking websites, a travel article.

The audit records three things from every answer:

  1. Which hotels are named, and in what order.
  2. What the answer says about your hotel, and whether it is correct. In this illustration the hotel has had a car park since it opened.
  3. Which websites the answer links to, and whether the hotel’s own website is one of them. In this illustration it is not.
This is an illustration. The question, the hotels and the answer are invented to show what the audit records, and no real hotel is described.

What a traveller asks an assistant about a hotel

We write the questions the way a traveller would ask them. Most give a place and something the traveller needs, such as parking, a meeting room or a late check-in, and one asks for reviews of the hotel by name.

  • “Which independent hotel on the Lower East Side is good for a long weekend?”
  • “Which hotels near the Metro Toronto Convention Centre have parking?”
  • “Which hotel in Brooklyn has a meeting room for twenty people?”
  • “Which hotels near Pearson airport allow check-in after midnight?”
  • “[Hotel name] Toronto reviews”

What the report marks for a hotel

  • A room type, a facility or a policy that an assistant states wrongly, such as parking, pets or check-in times.
  • An answer that links to booking websites and not to the hotel’s own website.
  • An address, a phone number or opening hours that differ between the website, the Google Business Profile and the listings.
  • A restaurant, bar or event space that the assistants do not connect with the hotel.

Where the answers come from

Cloudbeds put 810 requests for hotel recommendations to AI assistants across six destinations. Online travel agencies, which are the booking websites, accounted for 55.3% of the sources cited. Hotels’ own websites accounted for 13.6%.

In SiteMinder’s survey of 12,000 travellers in 14 countries, 4% said they begin their hotel research with an AI tool, up from 1% a year earlier. A further 26% begin on a booking website and 21% on a search engine.

What an AI visibility audit for hotels and hospitality groups checks

Each step leaves a record for each property, so every finding in the report points to the saved answer it came from.

The questions
They are written for each property in a traveller’s words. Most give a neighbourhood or a landmark and something the traveller needs, and do not name the hotel.
The three assistants
Each question goes to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity with web search switched on. Every answer is saved word for word with its date.
Whether the property is named
We record whether the property appears in each answer and where it sits in the list. An assistant sometimes asks a question back, and those replies are counted separately.
Which hotels are named instead
We list the competing hotels the assistants name, with the number of answers each one appears in.
Rooms, facilities and policies
We read what each assistant says about the property and mark each detail that is wrong or out of date.
The websites each answer cites
We record the websites each answer links to. We note whether the hotel’s own website is one of them or whether the links go only to booking websites.
The property’s own sources
We then check the hotel’s website, its Google Business Profile, its reviews and its listings against what the assistants said.
Restaurants, bars and event spaces
Where a group runs them, they are checked with their own questions.
What was not checked
The report states anything we could not check, with the reason.

How the work continues after the audit

The audit ends with a written list of fixes. Your own team or your agency can carry them out from the report.

Some owners prefer one person to carry out the fixes and lead the rest of the marketing. That is a fractional CMO engagement with Saad Afsar, and the standard terms are listed here.

If the engagement starts within 30 days of the audit, the $1,500 audit fee is credited toward the first month.

Saad has 15 years of marketing experience. He has led marketing for 40+ brands and has enterprise experience at Unilever and Samsung.

Questions and answers

What is an AI visibility audit for a hotel?

It is a check of what AI assistants say when a traveller asks them where to stay. The audit records whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name the hotel and whether they have its rooms, facilities and policies right. It also records the websites each answer relied on, and it ends with a list of fixes in order of importance.

Does the audit show whether the assistants link to our own website or to booking websites?

Yes. The audit records every website each answer links to, and it notes whether the hotel’s own website is one of them.

We also run a restaurant and an event space. Are they covered?

Yes. They are checked with their own questions, because a traveller and a local diner ask an assistant different things.

Can the audit guarantee that an assistant will recommend our hotel?

No. Each company decides what its own assistant says, and nobody outside the company can set that. The audit shows what the assistants say now and which websites they relied on. The fixes are made to those sources.

What does the full audit cost?

The full audit costs $1,500 for one location and $400 for each additional location. If a fractional CMO engagement starts within 30 days of the audit, the $1,500 is credited toward the first month.
