AI visibility audit for law firms

An AI visibility audit for law firms checks what AI assistants say when someone asks them to recommend a lawyer.

The assistants are ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini and Perplexity. The audit records whether each one names the firm and whether it has the practice areas, the lawyers and the offices right. It also records the websites each answer relied on.

The same work is also sold as AEO for law firms. AEO is short for answer engine optimization.

The first review is delivered within two business days. It's a real human analysis of your brand, not an automated PDF.

Someone with a legal problem types a question into ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity:

“Who is a good employment lawyer in Toronto for a company with thirty staff?”

The assistant writes back with something like this:

Here are three firms to consider.

  1. A competing firm Described as an employment practice that acts for employers.
  2. A second competing firm Described from its entry in a lawyer directory.
  3. Your firm Described as a personal injury practice.

Websites linked in the answer: the first firm’s website, a lawyer directory, a news article.

The audit records three things from every answer:

  1. Which firms are named, and in what order.
  2. What the answer says about your firm, and whether it is correct. In this illustration the firm stopped taking injury cases two years ago.
  3. Which websites the answer links to, and whether the firm’s own website is one of them. In this illustration it is not.
This is an illustration. The question, the firms and the answer are invented to show what the audit records, and no real firm is described.

AEO for law firms starts with the questions a client asks

We write the questions the way a client would ask them. Most give a practice area or a problem and a place, and one asks for reviews of the firm by name.

  • “Who is a good employment lawyer in Toronto for a company with thirty staff?”
  • “Our landlord wants to end our restaurant’s lease early. Which lawyer in New York handles that?”
  • “Which estate lawyers are near Yonge and Eglinton?”
  • “Which law firm in Manhattan reviews franchise agreements for a fixed fee?”
  • “[Firm name] Toronto reviews”

What the report marks for a law firm

  • A practice area the firm no longer offers, or one it offers that no assistant mentions.
  • A lawyer who has left the firm and is still named.
  • An address, a phone number or office hours that differ between the firm’s website and its directory entries.
  • A description that claims the firm is better than other firms or that promises a result.

The advertising rules

Lawyer advertising is regulated. The Law Society of Ontario requires a lawyer’s marketing to be true, accurate and verifiable, and not misleading. The American Bar Association’s model rule bars a false or misleading communication about a lawyer’s services, and each state bar sets its own rules.

The fixes recommended for a firm’s website and listings are written to comply with those rules, and the firm’s own compliance review decides what is published.

What Google says about its own AI answers

Google states that a page needs no special markup to appear as a supporting link in its AI answers. The page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet.

What an AI visibility audit for law firms checks

Each step leaves a record, so every finding in the report points to the saved answer it came from.

The questions
We write them by practice area and by city, in the words a client would use. Most do not name the firm.
The three assistants
Each question is put to ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity with web search switched on. Every answer is saved word for word with its date.
Whether the firm is named
We record whether the firm appears in each answer and where it sits in the list. An assistant sometimes replies with a question of its own, and those replies are counted separately.
Which firms are named instead
We list the other firms the assistants name, with the number of answers each one appears in.
Practice areas, lawyers and offices
We read what each assistant says about the firm and mark each statement that is wrong or out of date.
The websites each answer cites
We record the websites each answer links to, and whether the firm’s own website is one of them.
The firm’s own sources
We then check the firm’s practice-area pages, lawyer biographies, Google Business Profile, reviews and directory entries against what the assistants said.
What was not checked
The report states anything we could not check, with the reason.

How the work continues after the audit

The audit ends with a written list of fixes. Your own team or your agency can carry them out from the report.

Some owners prefer one person to carry out the fixes and lead the rest of the marketing. That is a fractional CMO engagement with Saad Afsar, and the standard terms are listed here.

If the engagement starts within 30 days of the audit, the $1,500 audit fee is credited toward the first month.

Saad has 15 years of marketing experience. He has led marketing for 40+ brands and has enterprise experience at Unilever and Samsung.

Questions and answers

What is an AI visibility audit for a law firm?

It is a check of what AI assistants say when someone asks them to recommend a lawyer. The audit records whether ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity name the firm and whether they describe it correctly. It also records the websites each answer relied on, and it ends with a list of fixes in order of importance.

Is AEO for law firms the same thing?

Yes. AEO is short for answer engine optimization. People use that term, and the term GEO, for the work of being named and described correctly in the answers AI assistants write.

Do the recommended fixes follow lawyer advertising rules?

The fixes are written to comply with the rules a firm works under. In Ontario those are the Law Society of Ontario’s rules, and in the United States they are the rules of the state bar. The firm’s own compliance review decides what is published.

Can the audit guarantee that an assistant will recommend the firm?

No. Each company decides what its own assistant says, and nobody outside the company can set that. The audit shows what the assistants say now and which websites they relied on. The fixes are made to those sources.

What does the full audit cost?

The full audit costs $1,500 for one location and $400 for each additional location. If a fractional CMO engagement starts within 30 days of the audit, the $1,500 is credited toward the first month.
